STREET SMARTS
"Helping Good People Stay Safe!"
.
STREET SMARTS is a personal safety course designed by Michael P. Melchor, a Certified Security Professional (C.S.P.), PNP-FED Certified Firearms Training Instructor, Self-Defense Instructor, and Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) practicioner. It explains the modus operandi of street criminals and what an ordinary person can do to stay safe in a predatory society. There is a particular emphasis on bladed weapons, because more than HALF of all criminals will carry the knife as their preferred tool for criminal assault. Knives and edged weapons are compact, easy to improvise, easy to conceal, silent, effective, and expendable. Blades are typically tossed away by criminals if they suspect that they are in danger of arrest. They do not need ammunition and they don't jam. They can cut, slash, and stab very efficiently. Knives and improvised blades account for 85% of the fatalities in violent street crime. Unfortunately, the vast majority of victims targeted by street criminals are women.
STREET SMARTS primarily focuses on preventive measures and examines the various stages of violent crime. It also focuses on how targeted victims can spot and/or avoid assault, and how to employ effective defensive measures. It teaches how to utilize improvised weapons from ordinary objects, how to report crime, how to prevent mobile phone theft, and how to recognize vital survival signals on the street.
Designed primarily for the youth, call center workers, students, and the elderly, STREET SMARTS is also valuable to anyone who may be at risk of violence in public places. Mike Melchor also teaches courses in Knife Defense, Tactical Flashlight, Tactical Baton, Self-Defense for Women, and Defensive Handgun Techniques. He is also an officer of the A2S5 Coalition, an anti-crime NGO that supports universal rights to life, liberty, and property.
